World’s Central Bank: Crypto Could Risk Bank Runs

How many central banks are actually considering their own version of cryptocurrency is unclear, Russia and Venezuela being the most infamous examples. To perhaps ward off serious consideration from more established economies, the Bank for International Settlements (BIS), the world’s central bank to central bankers, is suggesting state-backed crypto might destabilize commercial banks’ customer deposits, negatively impacting the “efficiency of financial intermediation.” Also read: Québec Premier: We’re Not Really Interested in Bitcoin Mining Central Banks Warned About State-Backed Crypto Chairs of two BIS working groups, Klaus Löber (European Central Bank) and Aerdt Houben (Netherlands Bank), submitted Central Bank Digital Currencies, a 34-page document meant to be a “high-level overview of [central bank digital currency (CBDC)] implications for payments, monetary policy and financial stability. The Role of Blockchain in the Food Supply Chain

The number of use cases for blockchain technology is a lot greater than most people imagine. Outside of the financial sector, there are dozens of opportunities waiting to be explored. OriginTrail, for example, is currently working on integrating data from forensic laboratories on the blockchain. It’s an interesting venture, although it remains to be seen how successful this project can be. Another use Case for Blockchain Technology On paper, blockchain technology can facilitate many different business models. Although most of the current focus lies on improving the financial industry as a whole, some companies are exploring other opportunities as well. Recording data in a safe and immutable manner, for example, is something a lot of companies would love to do. It may even have major repercussions for the rest of the world in the long run. The work being done by […]

EOS, Cardano and Tezos: Sleeping Giants Starting to Stir

EOS, Cardano and Tezos are cryptocurrency’s big sleepers. The latter project has lain dormant since last summer while its legal troubles played out, while EOS and Cardano have been beavering away, but have yet to produce the goods. With signs that all three projects are now stirring into life, investors might finally see a return. The question is, which of these sleeping giants – if any –  can lay a glove on Ethereum? European Central Bank: Bitcoin ‘Not The Answer To Cashless Society’

The European Central Bank (ECB) claimed Bitcoin is “not the answer to a cashless society” March 13 while also casting doubt on bank-issued digital currencies. Bitcoin ‘Spotlights System Failures’ In an “opinion piece” co-authored by Benoît Cœuré, ECB board member and chair of the Bank for International Settlements’ (BIS) Committee on Payments and Market Infrastructures, as well as chair of the BIS Markets Committee Jacqueline Loh, the bank argues Bitcoin represents a “challenge” due to banks’ failure to provide suitable international remittance options for consumers. “Despite its many faults, bitcoin has put the spotlight on an old failing of our current system: cross-border retail payments,” they write. …These payment channels are generally much slower, less transparent and way more expensive than domestic ones. FashionTV Jumps on the ICO Bandwagon

It seems everyone and their dog is planning to launch a cryptocurrency of some sort these days. One would almost think the early days of altcoin development are back, but these new coins all serve very different purposes. FashionTV is the latest large entity to announce plans for a cryptocurrency and an ICO. The FashionTV ICO While it may make a lot of sense for companies and TV networks to create their own digital currencies, convincing the general public is a different matter altogether. With FTV Coin, FashionTV is headed down a very interesting path. Issuing a digital currency doesn’t necessarily serve a purpose, even though there will be some use cases for this token in the long run. FashionTV announced the launch of their digital currency not that long ago. It seems the pre-sale of FTV Coin is already underway, and that it’s mainly designed to access […]

Bitplay Club’s new implementation of its 100% provably fair lottery now features a 5-36 number format. In major respects, the 5-36 format is similar to the earlier 6-45 version. The defining feature of both formats is that they depend on the blockchain protocol in determining the winning numbers. This provides assurance that the drawing results are indeed random and cannot be influenced by the lottery operator. More specifically, the drawing results depend on the hashes of the recent blocks found on the blockchain. The hashes are used as input in a special formula that determines the winning numbers. The formula is publicly available and posted on the company’s website. Thus, the operator enables anyone to check the […]

EBA Chairman Sees No Reason to Further Regulate Cryptocurrencies

It has become apparent that cryptocurrency regulation in Europe is still several years away, if not longer. A few months ago, the ECB made it clear it was not interested in intervening where cryptocurrencies were concerned. Similar statements have now been issued by the EU Banking Authority. All of this is a positive development for the industry, although it also means there is still a lack of “legality” in Europe. The Future of Cryptocurrency in Europe Depending on how you want to look at it, a lack of cryptocurrency regulation can be a good thing or a bad thing. While most industry enthusiasts aren’t too keen on governments or banks meddling with cryptocurrency, no one can deny those efforts provide more legitimacy to the industry as a whole. The Power of Tokenization: How Tokens Benefit Assets

There is nothing new in a token serving as a representation of an asset with certain value. We can take subway tokens or casino chips for example. In this case, tokens represent money we pay for using public transport or put at stake while gambling. But the money is a kind of token too as its face value exceeds the cost of production. Taking this into account, the tokenization is by no means a new phenomenon, but the blockchain technology does give a new impulse to the process. People buy many different assets, like stocks or gold, in order to invest their money rather than to use the assets day-to-day. They don’t need to get gold bars stored in the living room, they just want to own a certain amount of gold and have an ability to trade it anytime […]

Goldman Sachs Warns Of Bitcoin Going Under $6000

Goldman Sachs analysts panicked Sunday, March 12 as Bitcoin’s volatility caused them to forecast a return to recent lows below $6000. Goldman Fears ‘Impulsive Decline’ In a note to clients, the global giant’s technical analysis team led by Sheba Jafari pointed the blame at market uncertainty thought to have begun from Mt. Gox trustee Nobuaki Kobayashi’s recent sell-offs. Having broken below $9210 Sunday, ultimately reaching closer to $8400, Bitcoin faced a potential freefall to $5922, the team claimed, with little support in between. “The break is significant as implies potential for a more impulsive decline,” Jafari wrote quoted by Business Insider. The next meaningful level is down at 7,687-7,198; includes the 200-dma and a 1.618 target off the high. As Bitcoinist previously reported, Kobayashi had staged several mass Bitcoin cash-outs since December in order to pay of Mt. Gox creditors, […]
