Singapore’s MAS Shuts Down ICO and Forces It to Refund Investors

Regulators continue to pressure cryptocurrency exchanges and initial coin offerings. This is only normal, as these new industries present many opportunities but also pose major challenges. The Monetary Authority of Singapore is cracking down on problematic ICOs. So much, in fact, that one particular project was forced to return its funds to Singaporean investors. Another ICO Goes Awry Over the past few months, various initial coin offerings have been scrutinized by regulators all over the world. The SEC has been cracking down on illicit projects and trying to bring them to justice. A fair few projects were shut down after violating securities laws. This issue is not unique to just the United States, as other countries have shown increasing signs of concern. In Singapore, for example, the MAS is bringing a lot of heat to initial coin offerings which potentially violate existing regulations. One project – the […]

Mark Carney: Bank of England Open to Idea of Central Bank Issued Digital Currency

Mark Carney, the governor of the United Kingdom’s central bank – the Bank of England –  spoke on a recent panel in Stockholm on the future of central banking where he stated that he is open-minded about the idea of a central-bank-issued digital currency. Could this be a sign that Carney is re-thinking his previously anti-crypto views? A Softer Stance from the Bank of England According to a report from Bloomberg, while the governor admitted openness to the idea, he was quick to point out that a central-bank-issued digital currency was not yet on the horizon. He added that cryptocurrencies do not perform the role of money. While not exactly ringing endorsement, it is nonetheless a far cry from his previous dismissal of Bitcoin as a failed currency and store of value. Part of Carney’s statement appears to be a sign of […]

Niall Ferguson Tells Bank of England Bitcoin Is Financial System of the Future

Central bankers are being warned by researchers that the crypto revolution will overtake the system they are in-charge of preserving. Recently, British economic historian and author Niall Ferguson told the Bank of England that Bitcoin is the financial system of the future. Also Read: This Week in Bitcoin: McAfee’s Bullish Prediction and a Guy Living in His Car The Future of Finance Niall Ferguson is a noted historian, commentator, and the author of fifteen books including The Ascent of Money and The House of Rothschild. What Is Bitcoin Incognito Cryptocurrency?

For those people who can’t get enough Bitcoins in their life, a new option is emerging. Known as Bitcoin Incognito, it is another attempt at fixing some of the glaring issues which Bitcoin presents. Whether or not this new fork will succeed is unclear, but more competition isn’t necessarily a bad thing. Anonymity and Bitcoin in one Package One of the biggest misconceptions people have about Bitcoin is that it is anonymous. That is anything but the case, though, as Bitcoin has neither anonymity nor privacy features. The currency allows one to be pseudonymous – similar to an online nickname – but not anonymous. Some projects are trying to address this lack of anonymity through various means. In the case of Bitcoin Incognito, there isn’t much information to go by at this time, as the project was only announced Friday afternoon. From what little information has been made public, it’s evident Bitcoin Incognito will primarily focus on proof-of-stake […]

OneCoin Activity in China Has Resulted in Nearly 100 Arrests Since 2017

It has been a while since we last heard anything about OneCoin. Although this blatant pyramid scheme is still active, it seems the regulatory crackdown is not slowing down in the slightest. In China, nearly 100 individuals are being prosecuted for promoting the OneCoin pyramid scheme, and that number may rise. The OneCoin Cancer Needs to be Removed Anyone who has ever laid eyes on the OneCoin website or met any of its promoters can see that this project is destined to fall apart sooner or later. Any company offering investment packages with virtually guaranteed returns after a fixed amount of time is running a pyramid scheme. Even so, it seems OneCoin has evaded a lot of scrutiny and legal issues in the past few years. That situation is – thankfully – slowly coming to change. Regulators all over the world are cracking […]

Bitcoin Price Watch: Currency Drops to $7,300

At press time, bitcoin is trading for just over $7,300. This is a near $200 drop over the last 24 hours, and the bears are still having their way. The current sentiment is that bitcoin could fall to as low as an even $7,000 over the next few days. The currency has been dropping gradually since Sunday May 13, after it spiked to a new high of roughly $9,800. Maybe bitcoin just doesn’t like Mother’s Day… Still, others remain skeptical that bitcoin will stay at the $7,000 position or spike soon after that. Willy Woo, for example, is a cryptocurrency and digital currency analyst. He believes bitcoin could potentially fall below the $6,000 mark in the short term, and test both the $5,700 and $5,500 marks respectively. He cites a high NVT signal, continuously high volatility, an overly high standard […]

‘Bitcoin Is The Future, Blockchain Is Bullshit’: Andreas Antonopoulos Preempts Consensus

Andreas Antonopoulos told conference members that “Bitcoin is the future and Blockchain is bullshit” days before the now-infamous Consensus 2018, it has emerged. Antonopoulos Champions Essential ‘Weirdness’ Speaking at the Polish Bitcoin Congress in Warsaw May 12, Antonopoulos, who has been a well-known Bitcoin advocate and educator since 2013, argued that Bitcoin’s “weirdness” and decentralization’s ability to “offend” were key to its success. “…The reason Bitcoin is interesting is because it’s not controlled, because it can’t be censored, because it’s open, because a lot of the people involved are very, very weird,” he said. Bogs and Wojaks: How Crypto Memes Help Traders Deal with the Downturn

The altcoin markets might be in freefall, ICOs dead in the water, and bitcoin nursing a fixed scowl, but you wouldn’t know it on crypto Twitter. Over the past 48 hours, its leading lights have been more preoccupied with having their profile pics “bogged” than posting charts. The Bogdanoff twins are one of the many memes to have taken over the crypto community, providing welcome relief amidst the growing gloom. Also read: BTCC to Launch New Exchange Platform in June When the Market Dies, the Memes Flourish Pepe Satoshi It would be easy to write memes off as the frivolous, ephemera that they are. British Company Successfully Trademarked the Term ‘Bitcoin’

Trademarks and patents are often frowned upon in the world of cryptocurrency. This decentralized technology is designed to be free and open to everyone. As such, trademarks and patents can cause a lot of unnecessary hindrances. In the United Kingdom, one company successfully trademarked the word ‘Bitcoin’. A Trademark With Major Implications Trademarking a commonly used term is not all that straightforward. Although one could obtain a trademark for the term “Bitcoin”, enforcing that trademark will be a different matter altogether. After all, the term Bitcoin has been ‘trademarked’ before, but it was never used to prosecute people using this term irrespective of their commercial interest. Even so, one particular company in the United Kingdom somehow managed to trademark the term “Bitcoin” in late 2017. It is a bit unclear how the company went about achieving this and what they aim to do with it […]

3 Cryptocurrencies and an ICO with Major Events in June (ETC, EOS, ONT)

Bitcoin and the cryptocurrency space has struggled after the recent Consensus event in NYC failed to boost the price, unlike the past few years. Nevertheless, there are still a few noteworthy events worth keeping an eye on, particularly for some altcoins. The Upcoming Week This week has many exciting deadlines that are rapidly approaching. Two cryptocurrencies that have made exceptional noise while entering the scene have been EOS and ONT. They both have mainnet launches in the next seven days. Mainnet launches are telltale signs regarding the future of the cryptocurrency. Any delays could be absolutely detrimental while a strong showing of timeliness can lead to market support leading to a bull rally. Both ONT and EOS should be a major focus this week as their future could easily be dictated in the coming days. Historically, many cryptocurrencies have timed […]

London’s Metropolitan Police Seize $667,000 Worth of Bitcoin

Hackers and other online criminals will continue to pay close attention to Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies. In London, police officials arrested one particular hacker and seized $667,000 worth of Bitcoin in the process. It remains unclear what will happen to the confiscated Bitcoins, although it seems likely they will be auctioned off. Another Bitcoin-related Arrest It is evident criminals are drawn to Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies for many reasons. One of the main reasons for this is that many people perceive Bitcoin and similar currencies as being anonymous. In reality, however, Bitcoin itself lacks privacy and anonymity features, whereas a few other currencies – such as Dash, Monero, and Zcash – take a completely different approach. Even so, criminals will try many different tactics to get their hands on cryptocurrency in one way or another. A hacker known as Grant West has successfully attacked dozens […]

Is Jack Liao Responsible for the Bitcoin Gold Network Attack?

There is a lot of speculation regarding the Bitcoin Gold issues. Some sources claim a mining pool attacked the network. Others claim it was Bitmain deploying additional ASICs to take over the network. It is equally possible Jack Liao himself is responsible for this development. Or that is what Jihan Wu wants people to consider, at least. The Bitcoin Gold network issues are quite worrisome. Whenever someone performs a 51% attack, all kinds of issues arise. They can block transactions or even perform double or triple spends. Moreover, the mining ecosystem also comes under a lot of pressure. The 2018 Year of Cryptocurrency Challenge – Week 20

Happy 20th week of 2018! Last week was the nineteenth installment of my challenge. It’s been a slower week than usual, unfortunately, but let’s dive into it anyway. TRY TO SPEAK TO AS MANY PEOPLE ABOUT CRYPTOCURRENCY AS YOU POSSIBLY CAN I didn’t end up going out too much this past week, so my in-person conversations involving cryptocurrency were a bit limited compared to other weeks. However, I still had a few good ones online. A friend of mine with whom I play a few games online (mainly PUBG) used to be into cryptocurrencies, and began looking into it again. He’s an aspiring streamer, and I suggested […]

Just How Big Will The 4th Pillar Be?

The 4th Pillar is out to solve Europe’s (and the world’s) workforce-related issues by upgrading the human resources industry — but how big can the company become? Let’s examine the market and analyze the project’s growth expectation. The State of the HR Industry Today Currently, there is a significant lack of workforce in Europe. It is becoming increasingly more difficult to find the right (let alone qualified) candidate with each passing year, and the costs associated with employee acquisition are skyrocketing — thanks to the need for extensive background checks and verification of a candidate’s past work history. Additionally, it is difficult to define incentive schemes for employees to change jobs, and it’s virtually impossible to verify work history when looking for candidates in other countries. Because of this, 38 percent of companies are currently considering digitizing their HR operations. […]

51% Percent Attacks: Hacking a $2 Billion Dollar Cryptocurrency for Less Than $1.5 Million

Also, as the price of popular cryptocurrencies increase and there’s more of a reward for attacking it, more and more people will look for inventive and profitable methods of attacking the $330 billion-dollar industry. While the math behind blockchains is solid and the security behind the top cryptocurrencies is still unmatched, the same can’t be said for smaller cryptocurrencies that use the same mining algorithms as the largest ones. Bitgrail Exchange Ordered Down Indefinitely as Italian Court Upholds Halt

Earlier this month, Bitgrail’s principal Franceso Firano attempted to reopen the Italian cryptocurrency exchange after $170 million in losses and during their legal sorting out. An inside job or software hack, that hasn’t had an official determination, and fingers are still pointing between the exchange’s charismatic operator and crypto devs. International heavy law firm Bonelli Erede effectively petitioned to have the exchange remain offline, instituting bankruptcy proceedings, and the Court of Florence recently agreed. Also read: DOJ Crypto Investigation Tanks Prices, Fundstrat Welcomes Adult Supervision Bitgrail Shuttered by Court of Florence “This morning,” a post on the exchange’s website read earlier this month, “following the re-opening, we were notified of a deed by the court of Florence requesting the immediate closure of Bitgrail and this situation will persist until a decision is made by the courts, about the precautionary suspension […]

Bitcoin Price Seemingly Heads Toward $7,000 as Bearish Sentiment Worsens

Not much has changed in favor of the cryptocurrencies over the past 24 hours. Every minor gain made yesterday has effectively been turned into a net loss once again. All currencies continue to follow the Bitcoin price in this regard, as BTC struggles to remain above $7,300. Bitcoin Price Dip Isn’t Over yet It is evident there is still plenty of negative pressure on all of the cryptocurrency markets today. This is all tightly correlated to how manipulators and speculators continue to push the Bitcoin price down for quite some time now. It is not necessarily a good thing by any means, but this trouble situation has been in place for quite some time now. It seems there will be no change in the Bitcoin price anytime soon either. More specifically, there was some brief positive momentum last night. With […]

Bitcoin Price Analysis: Rumour Has It…

Bitcoin price action continues to slide in favor of bears as the cryptocurrency dips below $8,000 for the second time in 7 days and a bear reversal is clearly in play. Market Overview ‘Rumour has it Bitcoin won’t see 10k anymore’ would serve as a suitable alteration to the chorus of Adele’s mega-hit, ‘Rumour Has It.’ It’s obvious that for the time being, bears are in full control of bitcoin price but this time it’s a little bit harder to discern the source of BTC’s recent turmoil. Could it be one of the following? Lingering effects of the Mt. Gox sell off? Simmering scandal from the Upbit and Bithumb investigations? Or perhaps it’s the whales on the run phenomenon as Bitfinex requested client tax and social security information to comply with federal SEC regulations? Those partial to conspiracies might be […]

Boom or Bust: There is no Middle Ground for Bitcoin, Says Crypto Asset Manager

On the subject of Bitcoin’s viability, there seem to only two conclusions. Either the number one crypto is either here to stay or it is just a fad. Thus, whether you support the “bubble” argument, the “currency of the future” notion or any other position, it all inevitably leads to the “boom or bust” conclusion or at least, so says Grayscale Investments managing director Michael Sonnenshein. Two Mutually Exclusive Bitcoin Future Outcomes According to Sonnenshein, there is no middle ground as far as Bitcoin is concerned. Speaking during a recent interview with Fortune, the cryptoanalyst said: As we begin to look at assets like Bitcoin and the unbelievable adversity it’s faced over the last ten years, every day that Bitcoin doesn’t go away, every day that Bitcoin overcomes a new challenge, for me that makes me feel that Bitcoin will […]

Ongoing Verge Issues Spell Problems for Pornhub Partnership

Even though a lot of people are still shocked that Pornhub actually took the plunge on Verge, it seems that decision may come back to bite the company. Due to the ongoing attacks against the Verge network, Pornhub and its cohorts are at risk of seeing transactions reversed or spoofed. It is a very big problem and an example of why solid technology should always be the foundation of any payment method. Pornhub and Verge Have Issues While one has to commend an entity such as Pornhub for accepting cryptocurrency payments, the decision to go with Verge still raises a lot of questions. The Verge network has faced multiple attacks in quick succession. The latest issue was uncovered earlier this week, as someone has successfully manipulated the network for the second time in a few months. While Verge’s developers continue to claim this is […]

Bitcoin Demanded for Safe Return of Beloved Dog

A scammer demanded $600 in Bitcoin for the safe return of a North Carolina woman’s dog, hours after the dog had already been found. Bitcoins and Basset Hounds Last weekend, Patricia Howell lost her basset hound, Happy. She quickly took to local online forums and in-town pet communities, posting pictures of the dog and her telephone number while asking people to call her right away if they had seen him. Within a few days, she received a text message from a burner phone demanding $600 in Bitcoin or else Happy would be sold off or even killed. The scammer claimed to be using a burner phone, supposedly so that the call couldn’t be traced, and advised Howell not to go to the police. The only issue was Howell had been reunited with Happy earlier that day thanks to the help […]

CryptoKitties Developers Face Lawsuit Over Alleged NDA Violation

In the world of blockchain and cryptocurrency, interesting projects can be found on a regular basis. CryptoKitties has received a lot of attention, in part because the project raised $1 million. However, it appears a lawsuit may be coming the way of the CryptoKitties team. This is due to an alleged violation of a nondisclosure agreement. A Major Concern for CryptoKitties? While no one will deny the success CryptoKitties has seen over the past few months, it seems not everything is going the team’s way right now. Generating a lot of buzz and raising money in the process is only one part of the story. It appears there are a lot of things happening behind the scenes which do not look all that promising. More specifically, there is an ongoing lawsuit against Axiom Zen, the developers of CryptoKitties. While their idea of creating blockchain […]

Crypto Traders Clamor for More Market Regulations

Crypto traders are calling for more regulatory oversight on a market that has traditionally been sparsely impacted by regulation. According to these stakeholders, “bad actors” need to be eliminated from the industry. By so doing, they believe that cryptocurrencies will become legitimized, thus attracting significant interest from institutional investors. Regulations Will Sanitize the Market Ran Neu-Ner, the CEO of OnChain Capital, believes clearly defined crypto laws will sanitize the market. According to him, such a move opens up the industry to an influx of new money from mainstream investors like hedge funds and family offices. Speaking to CBNC, Neu-Ner stated that there could not be robust regulations without significant crackdowns on shady business practices in the market. Commenting on the matter, the OnChain CEO said: I hope that they can catch the people [responsible for the spoofing and wash trading] […]

Pornhub Launches a Free VPN Service to Bypass Internet Censorship

Internet censorship has become a major problem over the past few years. Despite more and more people getting connected to the internet, it is still nearly impossible to access most information without encountering some form of restriction. As such, users often have to rely on third-party services, including VPNs, smartDNS solutions, and specialized browsers. Pornhub is now making its mark on the VPN industry. Why Does Pornhub Now Offer a VPN? On paper, the last thing anyone expected from Pornhub was to see the company develop its own way of bypassing internet censorship to make online information accessible. Even so, Pornhub is a technology company in every possible way, and thus it only made sense that they would explore new options when the time was right. Its newest solution is known as VPNHUB. It is an application for mobile and desktop which helps […]

Bitcoin Price Watch: Currency Spikes Up to $7,500

At press time, bitcoin has incurred a small rebound, and is now trading for roughly $7,500. This marks a $100 spike from yesterday’s price, though that, in turn, marked a $100 fall from 48 hours ago, when bitcoin had previously been trading for $7,500. Thus, while bitcoin’s new position is a move in the right direction, it’s hardly something to get super excited about. Previously, the currency had broken key support levels in the $7,000 range, but while the bears still have primary control, sentiment does suggest that this is only temporary, and that one uptrend is all that’s really needed for the bulls to step in and take the reins. One of the reasons behind bitcoin’s latest price drop may stem from India. The country isn’t exactly known for being entirely friendly towards crypto (the RBI has already banned […]

Researchers Claim $1.2B Worth of Crypto Has Been Stolen Since 2017

Cryptocurrency has been a prime target for criminals for quite some time now. This trend has only intensified over the past few years. A new study by the Anti-Phishing Working Group claims that close to $1.2 billion worth of cryptocurrencies have been stolen since early 2017. It’s a very worrisome number that warrants some clarification. Criminals are Crazy for Crypto It is no secret that criminals all over the world have been paying extra attention to cryptocurrencies over the past few years. In the minds of most criminals, this form of money is anonymous and will help them cover their tracks. In reality, however, most (though not all) cryptocurrencies are anything but anonymous or privacy-oriented. Given the rise of blockchain analysis firms, using Bitcoin for criminal purposes is less favorable now than ever before. Even so, there have been numerous thefts of various cryptocurrencies in the past […]

Beware of the Malicious Mac Monero Miner

Malicious cryptocurrency mining tools have become a big problem over the past few months. In most cases, this malware only affects Windows users, although some Linux variants exist as well. It seems a stealthy Macintosh cryptominer has been utilizing the XMRig source code to mine Monero on behalf of criminals. A Malicious Mac Cryptominer Appears For the most part, users of the Macintosh operating system have been safe from harm in regards to malware and cryptocurrency miners. While that is still the case today, it does appear things are changing rapidly, and not for the better. In fact, a cryptominer affecting the Macintosh platform was discovered earlier this week. As it happens, this malware doesn’t necessarily pose much of a problem. That’s because it is possible to remove this malicious cryptominer with relative ease. Moreover, the tool itself isn’t extremely sophisticated, although it indicates MacOS is a platform of increasing interest […]

Rewards.com Begins Offering Cryptocurrency Rewards

Cryptocurrencies are slowly making inroads in various areas of finance. So far, there has been little to no progress in regards to loyalty schemes or bonus point offerings. Rewards.com is looking to shake things up by offering Dash support to its customers. As such, users can earn rewards for making retail purchases in the form of cryptocurrency. A Feather in the cap of Dash It is evident getting people interested in cryptocurrencies will not be easy by any means. To most people, this new form of money offers no real improvements. TrustToken’s Rafael Cosman on TrueUSD, Fiat-Pegged Stablecoins, and the Binance Pump (Interview)

Stablecoins — particularly those backed by fiat currencies like the US dollar — are a hot topic in today’s cryptocurrency industry. Bitcoinist recently caught up with Rafael Cosman, CTO and Co-Founder of TrustToken, to talk about the company’s new USD-pegged stablecoin, it’s relationship to other stablecoins like Tether, and the price spike following TrueUSD’s listing on Binance. Here’s what he had to say.  Bitcoinist: TrustToken is a platform to create asset-backed tokens, such as gold to gold tokens or dollar to dollar tokens. How exactly does this process work? RC: The TrustToken Platform deposits the asset into a fiduciary partner’s escrow account as collateral and then creates tokens that are equal to the value of the asset. For example, TrustToken’s smart contract is designed so that we do not mint new TrueUSD unless the corresponding amount has been received from market-makers in the […]

How the First Blockchain Art Award Can Paint a Brighter Picture for Open Creation

Who would have thought that with the emergence of blockchain technology would come fame, recognition, and awards? Well, the art world has long been issuing awards to support freedom of expression and creation. However, the problem with many of these awards it that they are voted on by an exclusive committee, presenting potential conflicts of interest and/or controversial judgments. It’s time to brush away the conflicts and controversy, and once again open the art palette to a neutral and open channel for recognition. What is the Award? Shying away from the traditional and centralized approach of earning recognition from an established reputation, market acceptance, or the biased opinion of whatever committee is doing the judging, blockchain tech presents an open and decentralized way of providing exposure and market acceptance to up-and-coming artists. FRESCO is the world’s first blockchain art digital asset network. […]
